Exam Tips – How to Do Well in HSC English

Proven strategies to score high in both papers — from time management and grammar drills to writing techniques and common pitfalls to avoid.

15 Tips for HSC English Success

1
Read the passage twice. First for general meaning, second for detail. Underline key words before answering MCQ and open-ended questions.
2
Manage time strictly. Allocate: Reading 60 min, Writing 50 min, Revision 10 min. Do not spend more than 12 minutes on any single writing task.
3
Answer in your own words. For open-ended questions, never copy full sentences from the passage — paraphrase to earn full marks.
4
Master the grammar basics. Articles, prepositions, right forms of verbs, and sentence connectors appear every year — practise 20 items daily.
5
For paragraph writing: follow the structure — topic sentence → 3-4 supporting sentences → concluding sentence. Keep it within 150–200 words.
6
For story writing: use the given beginning, add a conflict or twist, and end with a moral or resolution. Maintain past tense and use linking words.
7
For letters/emails: learn the format cold — sender's address, date, salutation, body (3 paragraphs), closing, signature. Format carries marks.
8
For graphs/charts: start with an introductory sentence stating what the graph shows. Then describe trends (increase, decrease, highest, lowest), and end with a concluding comment.
9
For poem themes: identify the central idea, the poet's tone, and the deeper meaning. Use phrases like "The poet conveys…", "The central theme is…".
10
For report writing: follow the format — headline, byline, date, place, body (what happened, when, where, impact), and conclusion. Use past tense.
11
For composition/essay: plan before writing — introduction, 3-4 body paragraphs, conclusion. Use topic sentences and transition words. Aim for 250–300 words.
12
Punctuation matters. Use full stops, commas, capital letters, and question marks correctly in grammar and composition sections.
13
Practise previous board questions. At least 5 years of board papers for both papers — this reveals repeated topics and patterns.
14
Write neatly and cross out cleanly. Examiners reward legible handwriting. Use margins and start each section on a new line.
15
Don't leave any question blank. Even partial attempts earn marks. For unseen topics, stay calm and apply the general structure you've practised.
